We recommend taking the following into consideration before downloading any large updates, for example a new map.
A wired internet connection is generally faster and more stable, in general:
Wired internet connection
We highly recommend using a network (Ethernet) cable to make a direct connection between your computer and the internet modem. A wireless internet connection can be used, but this can be subject to interference which can result in a slow or failed download.
Download times depend on the size of the update as well as the internet connection speed at your location:
File size versus download time
The TomTom software will list the size of the update(s) before you start the download. The table below shows the estimated time to download each file size compared to the internet connection speed. The bigger the file the longer it will take to download. If the speed of your internet connection is listed as ‘Not Recommended’ for the size of the file you want to download, try a location that has a faster internet connection.
Tip: There are many websites that can test the speed of your internet connection. The table below refers to the download speed.
|512 Kb/s||1.5 Mb/s||8Mb/s||20Mb/s||50Mb/s||80Mb/s|
|8 MB||2 min||less than 1 min||few seconds||few seconds||few seconds||few seconds|
|30 MB||8 min||3 min||less than 1 min||few seconds||few seconds||few seconds|
|50 MB||14 min||4 min||less than 1 min||less than 1 min||few seconds||few seconds|
|128 MB||34 min||11 min||2 min||less than 1 min||less than 1 min||few seconds|
|256 MB||68 min||23 min||4 min||2 min||less than 1 min||less than 1 min|
|46 min||9 min||3 min||1 min||less than 1 min|
|91 min||17 min||7 min||3 min||2 min|
|3 hours||34 min||14 min||5 min||3 min|
|6 hours||68 min||27 min||11 min||7 min|
|12 hours||2.3 hours||55 min||22 min||14 min|
All values in this table are theoretical values.
External influences lower the actual download speeds.
Security software and hardware can cause a failed download and/or installation:
Security software and hardware, workplace and public internet connections
Firewalls, routers, antivirus scanners and pop-up blockers can also interfere with a download if they are not set up correctly. Check the settings to make sure the TomTom software has full access to the internet.
If you are trying to download an update at your workplace, be aware that your company may have download restrictions and access policies that may prevent a map from being downloaded.
Also, if you are using a public network, it could be an unstable internet connection and may cause a download and/or installation failure.
When using TomTom HOME, you can check whether it has successfully connected to the TomTom servers:
- From the menu bar in TomTom HOME click Help, then click System Information.
- Locate the Connection status at the bottom of the page.
If TomTom HOME is correctly connected, you see the word "success" at the end of each line. If you see the word "fail", this could mean that security software (firewall or virus scanner) installed on your computer or hardware (internet modem or router) is interfering with the connection to our servers. It can also mean that our servers are temporarily unavailable.
The connection check can take up to 30 seconds to complete. If no test results are shown after 30 seconds, click Done to close the system information page, then open the system information page again. You should then see the results of the check within 30 seconds.
