Fitness points for the same kind of activity differ on different days
Fitness points are gained based on the following:
- Your current fitness level ie. your Fitness Age and VO2max.
- The intensity and duration of your activities, where intensity is measured using your heart rate.
Although you are doing the same type of activity, your heart rate might be different for activities done on different days. For instance, you might be sick or not feeling well, you might have just started training after a break, or you might have been training in a headwind.
TIP: The time spent in higher heart rate zones causes your points to accumulate faster.
This also means that as you get fitter, the same type of activity like your 5 kilometre runs at 10km/h earn you less points than it previously did, and you need to step up your distance or pace.
How fitness points accumulate during an activity
There are diminishing health benefits when you do repetitive (daily) activities and this in line with how the human body works. It’s better to get moving a few times per week for shorter periods, than once with a very long duration. So for example, the first 10 kilometres of a long run might generate points faster than the final kilometres.
Why you and your friends are different
The fitter you get, meaning you have a lower Fitness Age, the more difficult it is to get the same incremental benefits as someone who is just getting started. So as you get fitter, the tougher it is to earn fitness points. This way, fitness points grow with you as you improve your Fitness Age.
