To view the full error message displayed in TomTom HOME, click Details .
The two most common error messages for HomeBase/IO are:
- "Error writing file"
- "Error during scanning for navigation items"
- "Internal/Malformed"
To fix any HomeBase/IO errors, you need to backup and restore your navigation device.
For instructions, select your operating system from the list below:
Windows 8
Back up your device
Important: You need this backup to restore your device!

In TomTom HOME, click Manage my device .

Click Items on device .

Select Maps .

Click Copy items to computer .
TomTom HOME copies your maps to your computer. -
Close TomTom HOME.
Format the internal memory or memory card
- On the start screen, type Computer and click on My Computer .
If you are using Windows 8.1 click This PC . - Right-click your navigation device and click Format .
- Make sure FAT is selected under File system.
- Make sure Quick Format is not selected.
- Click Start . A warning is shown.
- Click OK .
Windows formats your device.
Remove old files from your computer
- In TomTom HOME, click Manage my device .
- Click Items on computer .
- Select Applications and Voices .
- Click Remove items from computer.
Install the application on your navigation device
- In TomTom HOME, click Update my device .
- Select the application and at least one voice.
- Click Update and install .
- Click Done .
Restore the map to your navigation device
- In TomTom HOME, click Add Traffic, Voices, Speed Cameras etc .
- Click Items on my computer .
- Click Maps and then click Add .
- Click Postcodes and then click Add .
Windows 7/Vista
Back up your device

- From the Finder menu, click Go then click Utilities . Then double-click Disk Utility .
- Disk Utility lists the available disks and their volumes. Select the volume under your navigation device.
- Click Erase and then select MS-DOS (FAT) from the Volume Format drop-down menu.
- Click Erase. A warning is shown.
- Click Erase. Disk Utility formats your device.

- In TomTom HOME, click Manage my device .
- Click Items on computer .
- Select Applications and Voices .
