Manually backing up a navigation device (TomTom HOME)

The easiest way to make a backup of all the contents of your navigation device is by using TomTom HOME. See How do I install TomTom HOME on my computer?

If you have encountered an error while trying to backup through TomTom HOME, it could be due to a corruption on your device. In these cases, we recommend that you restore your navigation device. See My device is not working. How do I restore it?

• Windows 8
• Windows 7 & Vista
• Windows XP
• macOS

Windows 8

1. Connect your device to your computer and switch it on.
2. Press the Windows key+E to open the Windows file explorer.
3. Double-click the Removable Disk of your device.
   A window opens showing the files and folders of your TomTom device.
4. Click Select all or press CTRL +A .
5. Click Copy or press CTRL +C .
6. Click Documents under Libraries in the Navigation pane.
7. Click New Folder and then type a name e.g. "TomTom Backup".
8. Press Enter .
9. Double-click the new folder to open it.
10. Click Paste or press CTRL +V .
    The content of your TomTom device is copied to the new folder. Depending on the map size this may take a while.

Windows 7 & Vista

1. Connect your device to your computer and switch it on.
2. Click the Windows Start button and then click Computer .
3. Double-click the Removable Disk of your device.
   A window opens showing the files and folders of your TomTom device.
4. Click Organise and then click Select All
5. Click Organise and then click Copy .
6. Click Start > Documents .
7. Click Organise > New Folder and then type a name e.g. "TomTom Backup".
8. Press Enter .
9. Double-click the new folder.
   A window opens for your new folder.
10. Click Organise > Paste .
    The content of your TomTom device is copied to the new folder. Depending on the map size this may take a while.

Windows XP

1. Connect your device to your computer and switch it on.
2. Click Start > My Computer .
3. Double-click the Removable Disk of your device.
   A window opens showing the files and folders of your TomTom device.
4. Click Edit and then click Select All .
5. Click Edit and then click Copy .
6. Click Start > My Documents .
7. Click File > New > Folder and then type a name e.g. "TomTom Backup".
8. Press Enter .
9. Double-click the new folder.
   A window opens for your new folder.
10. Click Edit > Paste .
    The content of your TomTom device is copied to the new folder. Depending on the map size this may take a while.

macOS

1. Connect your device to your computer and switch it on.
2. On your macOS, select the desktop icon of your TomTom device by clicking it once.
3. From the Finder menu, click File and then click Duplicate .
   macOS creates a copy of your TomTom device in a new folder on your desktop.
