Tom's alerts are generated directly by the TomTom app. Therefore, it is necessary to install the TomTom app on your smartphone. The app is available at no cost from both Google Play and the Apple App Store.
Pairing Tom with the TomTom app requires:

- iOS 18 or higher
GO Expert app
Tom by TomTom is only compatible with the new TomTom app. This is due to the underlying technology the TomTom app is built on. This differs from the GO Expert app. But both apps can be used simultaneously, it shouldn’t make a difference to your user experience.
You can navigate with the GO Expert app and enjoy all the premium navigation features it has to offer. And by mounting Tom on your dashboard (and having TomTom app running in the background), you are warned of speed cameras, traffic and obstacles on the road.
Regardless of what type of app you’re using for navigation, you can always use Tom by TomTom next to it. Just make sure you have TomTom app installed on your smartphone, but since this app is free of charge and there is no subscription required, there is no cost involved to use TomTom app. Also, TomTom app can simply run in the background to feed the alerts to Tom while you may have another navigation app running in the foreground.
